Dark Horse Star Wars Hyperspace Stories #6: Inside Job Thoughts

Before he met his end at the hands of Han Solo, Greedo was just trying to get some attention. More specifically, trying to get Jabba the Hutt’s attention. But in Hyperspace Stories #6: Inside Job, he gets over his head for a pretty face.

The Story

Greedo falls for a Femme Fatale | credit Dark Horse Comics

Greedo is hanging around Jabba’s Palace trying to get work from the mob boss when Bib Fortuna informs him that he is getting attention, but not in a good way. Fortuna offers some advice to the Rodian: work your way up. Until then, don’t show your face in front of Jabba. But Greedo stays in the palace trying to pick up work until one day, he hears the singing voice of Bennun Glau and falls in love. He tells Glau he would do anything for her, so she takes him up on that promise.

Greedo begins to do odd jobs for Glau, including purchasing a ship and getting rid of one of Jabba’s security guards when she knocks him out. Glau tells Greedo she has to leave Tatooine because Jabba will seek revenge and tells Greedo she will meet him at the Mos Eisley food court so they can go together.

Instead, Greedo waits for hours, Jabba the Hutt arrives, and the two connect over love. Jabba is also waiting for his lover. We know where this is going. Jabba is informed that his lady love has gone off-world, taking his Starburst Gem and having the assistance of a green Rodian. Greedo desperately tracks down Glau, who offers the location of a Wookiee on Jabba’s bounty list that is worth more than the gem she stole.

Greedo captures the Wookiee and brings him back to Jabba to offer an apology. Unfortunately, this is not the Wookiee Jabba is looking for. The Wookiee’s name is Brewhada, and he is a toy maker. Greedo, fast on his feet, says he brought the Wookiee to him to make a custom gift for Jabba’s son, Rotta. Pleased Jabba removes the bounty on Greedo’s head but informs the Rodian that he is indebted to the Hutt for his life. Unfortunately, Brewhada is stuck being Rotta’s toy maker, with Jabba taking a cut of his profits for his toy factory on Kashyyyk. The toy Brewhada is working on is Viiveenn’s doll.

This story drags the most out of the series so far, and part of that is knowing the Wookiee doll still needs to factor in, so we are just inadvertently waiting for it to appear. It is also a mediocre story, and it is clear that Glau is using Greedo, who comes across as completely incompetent. It is difficult to tell whether this occurs before or after The Clone Wars episode, “Sphere of Influence,” where the Trade Federation hires Greedo to kidnap a Pantorian Chairman’s daughters. Still, the Rodian was slightly more effective there.

The Characters

Greedo inexplicably puts his faith in Glau one last time | credit Dark Horse Comics

Han did not take Greedo seriously when we first met him in A New Hope. And, apparently, no one ever took him seriously, which makes his death even sadder. Unfortunately, this issue does not make the case that Greedo is someone we need to know more about. Even though Greedo feels he is in a better place at the end of the issue than where he started, he is essentially an indentured servant.

And he dragged a poor Wookiee toy maker into the situation. We do not get much from Brewhada, but his life seemed pretty cool: traveling the galaxy trading for materials for his toy factory on Kashyyyk. Hyperspace Stories has done a solid job of introducing Wookiee characters that show the nuance and depth of their culture.

Bennun Glau is a one-note Femme Fatale who only has room to send Greedo into the clutches of Jabba. And Jabba is Jabba.

Canon Contributions

Brewhada is trapped, for now, making toys for Rotta | credit Dark Horse Comics

Rotta has rarely been referenced outside of The Clone Wars (2005), so surprisingly, the little Hutt factored into the origin of Viiveenn’s doll. And the origin reveal is the most relevant thing in “Inside Job.” The next question is, how did Senator Yarua come into possession of one for his daughter? If he is still allowed to produce toys for his factory on Kashyyyk, that could be the easy answer; however, as a Senator who likely travels a lot, it would be more interesting if it was on Tatooine from Brewhada directly.

Overall, this story is more noteworthy of the last few pages and establishing a beginning point of our journey than being a meaningful contribution to Greedo as a character. Some people are just unlucky.
